Looking ahead, current net exports of electricity supplies will likely turn into net imports by 2020 due to retirement of the Pickering nuclear power units.  According to the 2013 Ontario Long Term Energy Plan, the Darlington and Bruce A nuclear units will undergo refurbishments from 2016 to 2025, while Bruce B is scheduled for refurbishment from 2025-2031. As these units go out of service, existing natural gas-fired, renewable electricity and hydroelectricity imports are expected to fill in for the missing nuclear. Another 1,000 MW of renewable wind and solar power is expected to come online by 2019.
